NMC registration pathway

International nurses join the UK via the NMC overseas pathway. This includes English proficiency testing (IELTS or OET), a Computer-Based Test (CBT), and an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) completed in the UK.

  • Step 1: English proficiency β€” IELTS Academic (7.0+) or OET (minimum B)
  • Step 2: NMC application and document verification
  • Step 3: CBT β€” computer-based nursing knowledge test

Eligibility & requirements

  • Training: Western/EU trained only β€” required for GMC recognition
  • Qualification: Primary medical degree plus postgraduate qualification (MRCP, FRCS, MRCGP or equivalent)
  • GMC registration: Full registration required or eligible β€” Prodesse supports the application
  • Experience: Minimum 3 years post-qualification
  • Language: English fluency β€” no formal test required for EU-trained
  • Nationality: No restrictions β€” eligibility determined by training background and GMC recognition
